Summary

CAVScene was developed as a tool that researchers can use to observe learning and activities in child care. CAVScene is software that is installed in an iPad. The observer uses CAVScene to extract movies or still images of key scenes in the activities of children and child care providers, and to describe points that came to their attention as footnotes directly on the screen. After the observation, they can add detailed observings, and reflect together with the child care providers on the basis of simple editing. This is where the viewpoints of the observers and the child care providers are merged to gain a deeper understanding. In this report, we captured the mechanism of the observation of events on the basis of the functional characteristics of CAVScene. This includes the following three elements: 1) clarification of “extracting” and “positioning” from the entire event according the time flow of time, 2) looking at the relation between the entire event and parts of the event beyond time, and 3) understanding a meaning by using language and symbols.
